One Hundred Days - Celebrating BKS Iyengar

https://youtu.be/D2Uav6Rv3YU

December 14th, 2018 marks 100 years since BKS Iyengar was born. He was born during the flu epidemic and grew up quite sickly. His brother in law introduced him to yoga in his teens and his health began to improve. He began teaching at about 17 years old and taught until his death 3 years ago. He was more than a teacher. He lived yoga and taught from his experiences and intelligence. Although I am not a direct student of his, but did see him daily for a month when I was in India, I have benefited from his teaching daily. From his books, videos and especially from learning from his teachers directly, which I continue to do.

When Guruji's book - Light on Yoga - was celebrating 50 years since it was first published I wrote 50 days of Light on Yoga. You can go back in my blog and read them if you like. Day 1 begins on September 29th, 2016.
http://plnyoga.blogspot.ca/2016/09/light-on-yoga-50th-anniversary.html

Starting tomorrow I am going to celebrate BKS Iyengar with 100 days of either a photo or short video. I encourage you to join me as the more we share his teachings the better!

In the light of Guriji..
Namaste.

Inspiration from other Yogis

Good Morning!🌞🌅
This is a much shortened version of my practice today. Although I do work like this often in my backbends I was inspired to add the handstands wheel which  I don't practice often.

PLN Yoga - New Business cards, postcards and flyers

I'm excited to have some new business cards, postcards and flyers to pass around. My other ones were getting a bit out dated as they still had the address of  the studio I had on 5th ave. on them.

This card is a little more general as I am teaching out of a few wonderful locations.

I am fortunate to be able to teach most of my classes in Prince Albert at Yoga Sublime Studio located at 1998 Central Ave.
I also teach a noon class at the Forest Centre in Prince Albert. If you work in the downtown area this is a great little spot.

I teach in Christopher Lake at the Anderson Community Centre and my home studio and if there is interest will be back teaching in Waskesiu this January.

I am available to private and semi-private classes also.

Check out my new cards and let me know what you think!
The dandelion has a lot of meaning to me. You can check out the story I wrote years ago and posted on my blog about the ordinary dandelion.

Utthita Hasta Padangustasana 1 - variation with two belts

Here is the YouTube link to the short video on how to use a belt to help keep the raised leg hip from hiking up too much. I hope it helps. I know it really helped me to feel how the hips should be so I could more easily tell when I Started to hike that hip up.

Yoga from the Core

Tomorrow I will be teaching a three hour workshop in Prince Albert at Yoga Sublime studio.

This workshop is designed to not only work on our core strength - as that is what supports us physically, but to create the space within to move inward to a place of serenity in body, breath and mind.

I have taught this workshop before, but like each of my classes they evolve and change as I evolve and learn.

If you have a few hours tomorrow to spend with me I would love to have you join this workshop.

Contact me plnyogastudio@gmail.com to register or visit the mindbody app for Yoga Sublime studio.

Field of Dreams

I grew up in the 80's and a big movie hit in the late 80's was Field of Dreams and if you know the movie I am referring to, I'm sure the next thing you are thinking is the famous line, "If you build it, he will come.", or maybe you thought that already when you saw the title of my blog. :)

(and no it's not "If you build it, they will come." - I've been corrected on this already.)

As a young kid the idea that believing in something enough that you are willing to risk everything was a pretty new concept. Actually, just believing in yourself enough that you could make something extraordinary happen was a pretty big concept.

But, as I've gotten older I realize that really is the only way one can live.  It is a hard way to live and I know I don't always choose this path, but I am trying to more and more.

I think this is another reason why the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar has appealed to me.
He taught about needing a firm foundation to be able to progress physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually on the yogic path - just like a plant needs strong roots to grow.

From Light on Life:
"A seed begins to grow from the inside. When given that right amount of soil or nutrients, air, water and sunshine it will flourish into a beautiful plant – whatever it was meant to be.  We may not know exactly when the seed of yoga was planted, but with awareness we too can realize we are exactly who we are meant to be and find from this core our life force or our true Self.

The conditions on the outside must be ripe for this to happen.  To move inward, one must not forget the body. Throughout the journey inward, the body must be kept active."

I know that if you plant that seed in yourself, water it daily and let it grow from the roots up you will build that foundation and enlightenment will come.

From Tree of yoga:

We want the action of yoga to bear fruit.  Remember the seed that we nurture to grow so that it can bear delicious fruit.  The joy that we feel when we taste that fruit cannot be expressed in words but only felt.  So, we must let that breath clear our head and hearts.

Mr. Iyengar writes that the inhalation is the movement of the self to come in contact with the periphery: the core of being moves with the breath and touches the inner layer of the skin. This is the outward process of the soul.  Exhalation is the return journey, the inward process, where the body, the cells and intelligence move inward to reach the core of the being.

To be whole and integrated means to find that connection and balance.

Keep following your dreams ~ I know with a steady and stable yoga practice it will come.

I will be teaching a Yoga for Building a Home Practice on January 27th at Yoga Sublime Studio in Prince Albert.  I will have posters out soon! If you are struggling with starting or maintaining a home practice this class is for you!  We will work through a few different sequences and discuss obstacles to our progress.  I hope you will be able to join me.

I hope you fulfill your Field of Dreams!

Namaste.
